Grounds for etching:

Baldwins Ink Ground (aka BIG) is marvellous. Click for Andrew Baldwin’s excellent process videos, for the BIG instructions and MSDS.

BIG is a non-toxic alternative to traditional etching grounds, and can be used as both a soft or hard ground.

• Andrew Baldwin’s videos detail how to use BIG ground.

• The important things are 1/ careful degreasing/cleaning (watch the videos) and 2/ bake the grounded plate for 6 minutes at 135C in a fan forced oven at least a day prior to etching. (Bake too short a time, and the ground stays sticky. Bake too long and the ground cannot be removed after etching.)

• The ground can be removed with low/non-toxic strippers. My current favourite is EcoConcepts graffiti remover, using all the usual safety equipment used for etching. (Glasses, gloves, apron, well ventilated, etc.)
