Mentoring
If you need assistance in solving technical problems or developing your print practice, you may wish to book a one-on-one session with Simone.
Always by appointment, best arranged several weeks in advance, pending studio and calendar availability. Week day afternoons preferable.
Please email Simone to check availability, advise your time frame and a concise description of the kind of assistance you are looking for. (Brief, dot pointed descriptions are perfect.) Simone will then telephone for a brief chat about your needs, and to make an appointment.
Hourly sessions: $90 per hour (+ GST). Minimum booking 1 hour, additional time charged in 30 minute increments. Can cover demonstrations, problems solving (with prints, plates, equipment, inking, printing and cleanup), as well as discussion/feedback on process. If the studio/classroom can be shared by others at the same time as your booking, no studio hire is required. (If you require sole access to the classroom, studio hire fees are $45 for a half-day and $95 for a full-day.)
Half-day sessions: 3 hours, morning or afternoon, Sundays-to-Fridays at 6 Manton St Hindmarsh (pending studio bookings).
Half-day fee: $240 (+ GST & possibly studio hire $45), incl most materials, studio tea/coffee provided.
Full-day sessions: 5 hours, Sundays-to-Thursdays at 6 Manton St Hindmarsh (pending studio bookings).
Full-day fee: $400 (+ GST & possibly studio hire $95), incl most materials, BYO lunch, studio tea/coffee provided.
Mentoring can be:
Formal, funded through a grant or institution. For example, mentorships with Rosina Possingham (ArtsSA mentorship), Meng Zhang (ACE Open mentorship) and Lauren Simeoni (Guildhouse mentorship).
Informal - organised direct by artists - as needed.
To enquire further, please email Simone.
UV Screen Exposures
Now available, yay!
UStP exposures possible for screens with outer frame dimensions of 50 x 40cm to 60 x 50cm.
Size #2 screens from Jones Print Technologies in Victoria 03 9357 5767 are perfect.
Or purchase second hand screens & squeegees from Leapfrog in Sydney - click here for more.
Transparencies approaching A3 in size. (A3 is ~30 x 42cm).
Preferred screen size 60 x 50cm (outer frame dimensions), that is, size #2 screens from Jones Print Technologies.
$55 strip/coat/expose (incl GST).
1 week turnaround for a clean screen coat/expose.
1-2 week turnaround for a strip/coat/expose.Please email Simone to arrange. (No drop ins thank you.)
Exposed with the Leapfrog Studente system, exposed from above the screen (meaning your transperancy should be reversed for closest contact and good detail) using the Murakami Photocure TXR pink emulsion.
For faster turnarounds, exposing different sized frames or for transperancies/images A3 or more, please contact Norwood Screenprinters (8363 3925) or Paden Printers in Edwardstown (8277 0535).
FYI, our exposure unit is very simple. Frames wider than 58cm will not fit. And the image on your transperancy should be smaller than A3. If you aren’t sure, please text a photo of your screen and transparency - both including a ruler or biro as reference - to Simone (0407 079 604) and she’ll get back to you.
Editioning
Simple editioning services are available with advance notice.
If you do not have access to a press, are time-poor or your favourite part is making your plate - rather than printing it - then you may wish to have Simone print your plates for you.
Please email Simone to check availability and advise your time frame.
Provide Simone with your block, paper torn/cut to size, colour samples and/or a BAT print to work from. She'll take care of the rest.
Fee: $90 per hour (+ GST), including set up and cleaning. Includes inks and miscellaneous consumeables. Minimum booking 1 hour, additional time charged in 30 minute increments.
The number of prints that can be pulled in an hour will be determined by the kind of print, the condition of your plate, your paper and the complexity of the print required.
As a gauge - when the print gods are smiling - 90 minutes with a perfectly cut and stored (and flat!) 30x30cm lino block, a perfect registration sheet, pre-cut/torn (and flat!) print paper and pre-cut tissue paper can result in 10-20 single-colour prints, including set up and cleaning. (The number of prints will be determined by the complexity of your lino block, the way in you’ve carved it, and the ways in which your plate and paper have been stored.
When relief printing - rubber and vinyl plates are best avoided - lino or marmoleum only please.
Always by appointment, best arranged several weeks in advance.
To enquire further, please email Simone.
Great notes…
And start up packs of materials…
These processes are each distilled into double-sided A4 summaries to help you print effectively and well. They are updated regularly, as materials and suppliers change, so the latest version appears below. (They are also the notes you receive when you enrol in the workshops for beginners printmaking, drypoint, lino printing and printing without a press, so if you are regional or interstate, they may help with basic problem solving.)
Click for a free sample - Acrylic Drypoint in a Cylinder Etching (Intaglio) Press - to give you an ideas of what kinds of things the notes cover.
The remaining sets of notes can be downloaded for AUD $15 each, or the complete set for AUD $50:
Cardboard Drypoint in a cylinder etching press such as the Enjay RP12 or Dorothy-the-Die-Cutter.
Monoprinting in a cylinder etching press such as the Enjay RP12 or Dorothy-the-Die-Cutter (image c/- artist Lisa Young).
Lino Printing in a cylinder etching press such as the Enjay RP12 or Dorothy-the-Die-Cutter (image c/- artist Lisa Young).
Adhesive Foam 1 & Adhesive Foam 2 in a cylinder etching press such as the Enjay RP12 or Dorothy-the-Die-Cutter.
Scratcher Foam in a cylinder etching press such as the Enjay RP12 or Dorothy-the-Die-Cutter.
And each of these processes can be printed in a regular cylinder etching press such as the Enjay RP12 as well as Dorothy-the-Die-Cutter.
